Nicole is featured on the cover of the new issue of The Edit. She talks about her new project Big Little Lies and shares about working with Zoe Kravitz. Zoe & Laura talk about their impressions of working with Nicole.

She’s laughing, but despite a career spanning more than three decades, Kidman admits that she hasn’t become immune to criticism, of her wardrobe or her work. “I’m not a fan of ‘Worst Dressed’ things because I don’t believe in crucifying people for their individual [taste]. It just seems nasty and misogynistic, so that needs to go away. I have worked with directors who are divisive, so I’m used to [criticism], and as my husband says, ‘You don’t want to have a thick skin; that’s not a compliment,’” she says, shrugging, signaling her acceptance of an unwinnable situation. “Oh well, sticks and stones can break your bones, but names will never hurt you, right?”

Luckily – although luck is undoubtedly the wrong word for it – the 49-year-old’s career has been more weighed down with praise than detraction, and after a blockbuster start she is now considered one of the great modern character actresses. “I’m dedicated to being the chameleon,” she explains. “Since I was little I was taught that when you are an actress you change the way you look and talk and move so that you create the character. That’s what I love doing; small role, big role, it doesn’t matter.”

Such total immersion can have its downsides, though. In HBO’s much-anticipated Big Little Lies, premiering February 19, Kidman (who executive produces the show alongside Reese Witherspoon) plays Celeste, an ex-lawyer-turned-suburban-wife and mother whose perfect-looking marriage to Perry (Alexander Skarsgård) belies a volatile relationship. “I was quite traumatized after [filming] because we would shoot [the violent scenes] repeatedly,” says the actress. “I was emotionally and physically traumatized. I’d come back and I’d need Keith to hold me, just to feel soothed.”

Any avid awards-show watcher would agree that seeing the reactions from the celebrities in the crowd is as much fun as actually watching the show — but what are the A-listers really thinking when the camera cuts to them?

Luckily, Best Supporting Actress nominee Nicole Kidman has the answer!

This week, the female nominees sat down with PEOPLE for an exclusive photo portfolio and video interviews — and Lion‘s Kidman wasn’t afraid to be honest about her internal monologue and shared some candid confessions with PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly Editorial Director Jess Cagle for The Cagle Exercise.

“When’s the bathroom break?” the actress immediately says after Cagle asks her what she’s thinking when the camera cuts to her. “My dress is so uncomfortable. And clap! Smile!”

But when she’s not thinking about when she can run to the bathroom next, Kidman also enjoys the host’s performance — choosing fellow Aussie as Hugh Jackman as one of her favorites.

“I think Hugh Jackman was really great as an Oscar host, and he’s a really great guy, too,” the actress said.

And the Oscar winner admits the best place to keep her coveted trophy from her 2003 win for The Hours is where it’ll get the attention it deserves — her parents’ house!

“Your parents’ house because then they can show it to all their friends,” Kidman admitted.

I find this so cute because Keith says it was love at first site for him too! Thank you for the article!

Nicole Kidman was smitten with husband Keith Urban from the moment they met — but apparently, he didn’t immediately feel the same way.

The Australian actress, 49, recently stopped by The Ellen DeGeneres Show, where she revealed that the country-music superstar, 49, didn’t call her for four months after they first met.

“I had such a crush on him and he wasn’t interested in me. It’s true!” the actress told host Ellen DeGeneres. “He didn’t call me for four months.”

And when Kidman revealed that she never asked Urban why he didn’t call, the comedian didn’t let him get away with it. “I don’t know, seems like he didn’t like you. That you would stay with him is weird,” the host quipped.

Kidman also talked about the funny moment when the couple realized they were nominated for awards on the same night and their 8-year-old daughter, Sunday Rose, had the perfect solution — she could be Dad’s date to the Grammys!

“The reason I’m in London [during the Grammys] is because I got nominated for a BAFTA, which is the British Academy, the equivalent of the Academy Awards here,” said Kidman, who is up for best supporting actress for her work in Lion. “But it’s on the same night as the Grammys.”

That’s when Sunday stepped in, but Kidman immediately shut it down. “Cause she’s 8 and they use inappropriate language, Ellen!” the actress explained.

Kidman, who is also nominated for an Oscar for best supporting actress this year, later opened up about winning her first Academy Award, for 2002’s The Hours.

“I sort of have snippets of memory of it. And I’ve actually never rewatched my speech, can you believe that?” the actress says about her first win. “But it is sort of like a dream when you win something like that cause there’s so many people watching. I didn’t expect it because I hadn’t won certain other awards, so I was sort of blindsided by it, but at the same time just beyond thrilled.”

But the actress revealed that the reason she “so badly” wants to win again is because she didn’t have the opportunity to thank her late father the first time around.

“I was so focused on thanking my mom because I wanted to thank her and she was the one sitting right there, and there’s something about that mother-daughter relationship” Kidman admitted. “And my dad was the kind of that, he’s not alive anymore, but the most beautiful man where none of that was important to him. He was always sort of like, ‘Oh don’t worry about me, thank your mother!’ “
